Day 99,100 & 101

Day 99 Left early from Katherine as the next stop was 195km to Victoria River. Pleasant enough ride but a strong cross breeze gave me the felling i was pushing into it.  Nothing really happened along the way except i  came across a snake sunning itself and i just rode past it and it didn't move so i stopped and took a photo. Not sure if it was dead or alive so i threw a rock at it and it looked up. It could of been hit by a car earlier because it just laid there till the next car came along and  exploded like bubble wrap and i heard it from 100mts away. Poor bugger.
Mr Bubble wrap
Off i went again and not far down the road i came across this sign and thought what the bloody hell am i doing here
Snakes now this.
Pulled into the first rest area and what now, a bloke walking a fat feral cat on a lead. This is becoming a very weird day
This is just one of the three feral cats he has in his caravan.  No
mate, I'm right for a cuppa

His a big cuddly boy who likes a scratch just like a domesticated one.
Back on the road and came across where Keith and the boys go every summer up from Port Fairy for there holi's
On the other side of the creek someone had stolen the sign as a souvenir. Bring it back Keith

One more sign made me laugh as i was looking for a place to stop and rest, then i saw this one
Theres no way I'm going down there ,bound to be eaten alive or bitten by a snake with a head on him like Joe Peci. Now that's scary.lol
Finally arrived at Victoria River and booked a basic room for 50 bucks , had a meal and retired for a good nights sleep.
Day 100 was a picturesque ride from Victoria River Road House through the hills to Timber Creek along the Victoria River. Stopped at Timber Creek to check the blog and for suppliers.
Leaving early from V.R R/H . Pic doesn't do it justice.

My first Boab tree of thousands.

Victoria River ,and I'm worried about if I've  enough water.
End up falling in a heap at dusk after about 70kms and set my tent up and had a beautiful night under the stars without my tent cover on so it was like a Michael Jackson Bubble.
The morning after
Day 101 was a grind as i still had about 100kms to get to the Border. When arriving i did the standard photo to prove I was actually there.
101 days to go from my front door around Australia and return to the W.A border anti clockwise,if that makes sense.
From the sign i pedalled up to the  quarantine building and the guys immediately asked for the bike to be put through the x ray machine and  if i had packed the bike myself. It came back with a positive reading of either high grade cocaine or speed in the frame, which they suspect I've been dabbling in to be able to get around so fast. I played dumb as though "i know nothing" They said it was near the seat area and they will have to take a sample to the lab and analyse it

Now its in here Sir and whatever you say now will be held against you later. You are allowed one phone call to your lawyer if it gets nasty

Luckily it came back registering as  an old 87yr old fossil which must of crawled up the frame work from some camping ground.  I was all clear to go and head to Kununarra and i made it in good time to book into the Pub. Here some miscellaneous pics to pass the time.

This is my small toy Fran from the Cafe in Larrimah gave me as i left which i shall give to a little Aboriginal girl at the right time. He sits up on the radio scouting  for snakes.

There you go Bluce , been there done that. Just West of Vic River.
One more thing before i go, because this will be the last blog for a while as I'm going off air to concentrate on getting through the kms until a place called Pardoo R.H. Still, perhaps i will be able to check any comments that you put through when i have reception.
Let me elaborate about the last day of the "15000km JIM KELLY MEMORIAL". That's right folks, that's what this has all been about. The day he was talking about bike riding and said to me " Your not a man till you've gone around the paddock" and planted the seed, was the day i knew he would love to see me do it. Only eight weeks out and rubbing his hands together saying ,not long to go now and grinning, there was no stopping me to give him the thrill of getting everybody together and all having a great time talking and laughing about the blog. Unfortunately for me that wasn't to be, but with Pat's and Joy's blessing the show has gone ahead regardless as i had made a promise i wanted to keep.
My entire motivation of pedalling and writing the blog everyday without hesitation is because while I'm doing this, to me, he has not entirely left yet. Perhaps people comment ,and think Jim is reading it.
So what I'm trying to say , lol, is that the last kms of the 15000km , Jim would  love you to be there with him riding home ,because honestly, its been him riding my bike all the way.

Who Roo?

Grant

  1. I knew this would happen.

You have gone very spooky with the comment about some one called JIM, riding your bike.

All along I thought it was YOU riding around the paddock...

  2. Glant, you don't know the damage you are doing to the Oil industry, God forbid if everybody started doing this, bloody hell they would all get fit, happy, tanned, good bowel movements from squatting in the desert, no MacDonalds etc. But who would read the Blogg, Lindsay?
I'm trying to get back to Perth for the 'Homecoming' but bastards keep buying motor cars and flying everywhere making it very hard.
Somebody said in a previous Blogg, "looking at the map it's all downhill now"
Keep making me proud both of you!

  3. Hey Grant, whats with the bloke & that cat on a lead? Very unusual ...shouldnt it be the bloke getting led around by some pussy? Hmm must have been in the sun too long or somethin'...anyway, make sure you steer clear of all that wildlife...its not like you're bloody Bear Grylls!
The Jim Kelly Memorial hey...well its a fitting tribute & I am sure Jim is watching, he would be proud of your achievment.

  4. You're in the middle of the Ord valley right now by the look of it, so pig out on all the fruit and melons for a change. Now you're back on the right (or is that left?) side of the border, maybe WA should secede from the rest of Australia so we can keep all that iron ore wealth where it belongs - you'll see long trains full of it of it before too long. And give a thought to the mental health of your blog-addicts as you get close to home: are you going to make 'em go cold turkey and just stop, or maybe you keep riding on after you drop Jim off to celebrate his great round-the-paddock achievement?

  8. Don't try to stop any of those iron ore trains...they are the life blood of Australia. When you get to Fitzroy Crossing there are two main pubs - one is really good (The Fitzroy River Lodge ??) - the other one...hmmm...The really good one is large, probably quite expensive (just for once treat yourself) but the meals have always been good when I have stayed there. I suggest you stay at the better hotel.

  10. Hi main bloggers ,yourv'e done it again and lifted me up to take on the next 160km to Halls Creek against the wind in the heat. Amazing how the same people just keep putting out. To be born with Empathy is a wonderful thing.

  11. No one has ever said that I have empathy for others before ....you learn something new everyday.

Warming to the idea of riding the bike in - only problem is that I don't own a bike!!

  14. Getting near Hall's Creek I see.
One man and another man as well, on a bike, pedaling all alone with just memories to break into song about.
One man doing all the hard yards, all the rest of us sitting on his shoulders. I'll go and have a nice cuppa tea for you now...
You can have thoughts to look forward too, as well, and to break into song about.

  15. I'm back in the land of fibre optic and high speed uncencored internet, dont you just love it?

The next log in must be Halls Creek? we all await 'on your shoulders' but I'm sure those shoulders are big enough, even if we all have cups of Tea.......

    love your Work

  16. Guys i am in Halls Creek but i am not blogging till Fitroy Crossing as i have been too busy catching up with my mate Tom,the cyclist who stayed with joy. Ive just about got the truth out of him what happened back in Scarborough. Should know by the morning.

  17. Well, I can tell you.
Fremantle are hopeless and the Eagles don't like winning away from home.
Now you can just head to Fitzroy, which used to be a Football team in the state of Victoria!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well i'm here and don't see any football team. What do they look like?. Would they be in the caravean park?. I'm confused

    ReplyDelete
  19. You certainly did not stop to smell the roses in Fitzroy...not sure if they grow many roses in Fitzroy in any event. We called into to see Joy and Pearl yesterday - Pearl seems to have made a full recovery and was looking quite contented. The Doc is working on the tandem bike option - the only way I am going to be able to participate in the "ride in"...he is going to have to do a lot of training before then. The other alternative is to put a trailer on the back of his bike which will require even more training on his behalf! We are working on the options and trust that others are working to sure up their plans for the final 5kms.
Up the hill to Broome and then it is all down hill.
    PS 17,550 hits wow!!!

  20. Well, I think it's time to admit to the truth.
    I have a confession!
I am addicted to 'Hybrid' and sometimes at the same time to 'Terrain'.
Now I know the first thing you do Grant is check the blog and see if there are added comments.
I'm sure other loyal followers might also hit the blog first.
    but,
    I have to say,
I go straight to 'Where the bloody hell...'
    how to explain this compulsion?
Well I hit 'Hybrid' first to see where you are. (at this moment you have pulled into a layoff,(the only one for 100 kms by the look of it) I check the flora and the state of the roads. Then I hit, 'terrain' to see what you have come through. Sometimes it's awe inspiring, sometimes like at the moment there just is no terrain. You cross a 100m contour line a couple of times in the next day or so, but really there is nothing, nothing much at all out there. And only a few days ago you were riding down a valley between some rough looking cliffs.
So, there it is, I am addicted to the where and how does it look. Hmmm! This will be a fix that will be hard to shake, as it feels as if I have had a little taste of the trip. It's not the same looking at Google Earth, it just seems to show either the topography or the map. Might have to investigate as I don't think I can go cold turkey in a few weeks.
Anyway, enjoy the wide open spaces. Any idea why they grade about a 100meters off from the side of the road at an angle into the scrub? Is that so you can hurtle safely off the road when the brakes fail?
Not much ahead either until you do a left hand turn south and come to a roadhouse somewhere in the middle of nowhere, just before crossing the Fitzroy. Take a photo!
Time to look at some more maps,
    take it steady boys!!

    1. The swales (I think) along the roadside are to handle the storm water run off when it buckets down in the wet season, because it's so flat out there. At least that's what I was told.

  21. I'm sorry I mentioned "footy team" as the mob I follow are no football team at all!
By hell you a re really moving...I see a few more days of Easterlies heading your way, but of course, riding a bike, you're always into the wind.
Don't go too fast, you'll end up with no eyebrows.

  22. Hi Grant, well done you are a marvel. See you very soon Jorn

  23. Are you going to give yourself a treat and pop into Broome for a day?

R n'R.God only knows you deserve it, I'm exhausted just following you on the 'tracker'.

    What a guy!!

  24. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Superman!

    ReplyDelete
  25. No, not Superman, Joy...Superman has supernatural powers and Grant does not.

I've just seen "The Dark Knight Rises." And at the 1 hour stage it suddenly hit me.

Grant is Bruce Wayne as a plumber, but when he gets on the bike he becomes something else.

Dressed in black leggings, gloves, a specially designed machine between his legs etc etc.

Yes he is THE DARK KNIGHT.

Holy mackerole...we should have seen this earlier. All the contacts with Gotham's weirdos.(Esp in the Northern states). Overcoming obstacles no mortal could face,(feral cats, road kill, wild animals, wild bogans, failing machine, etc etc) Even the self doubts and calls to his followers to "get their acts together" which shows his feminine side.(The side all female followers love, esp with self pictures!!)

    Go BATMAN KELLY..THE DARK KNIGHT

  26. Maybe Linds is onto soemthing....are you on a batmobile? Or is this a personal time trial sprint leg or something? Are you trying to make it to Broome tonight? Watch out for cattle on the road in the dark if you are and better watch out for the radar traps too, the rate you travelling at.

  27. Hi Grant. Glad to see you`r still `riding along on your push bike buddy, ridin along, singing a song,` I told a workmate that you had worn out the pedals, he`s an avid cyclist and has done some of the tour de france course, and was impressed. we discussed other similar feats of dedication and endurance like the ` bird` Charlie Parker doing 20,000 hours practice as a teenager and the keys falling off his sax and the `Old Man ` in the novel ` the old man and the sea` when he arm wrestled the big champ from Cuba starting in the evening and they were still battling as the sun came up the following morning, with blood coming out from under their fingernails, neither man willing to quit. Keep up the good work Mate. Regards, Mike.

  28. Linds I think you are on to something. The Doc and I saw Batman last night and loved it. Since reading your email I have been reflecting on a few things. We had dinner at Grandmas tonight and Joy joined us. I started thinking how much she resembled Cat Woman. When I mentioned this she quickly changed the subject and started talking about Pearl. Hmmm I think Joy uses Pearl as a decoy - why would someone be so caring to a dog unless they were trying to distract people from knowing the truth about their double life. Perhaps Grandmas house has a bat cave beneath it!! Other characters are coming to mind also.....do we have our very own Joker - is the Rat really the Rat or is he the Joker!!

Fellow bloggers lets give "Bruce Wayne" a rousing welcome when he arrives in Broome - it is a long lonely ride into town and I am sure he wants to hear from all of you - just a hello or a few words of encouragement to get him to the next town. Hopefully Alfred will be there to make him a cup of tea!
