Day 114,115,116 & 117

Day 114 started late as i was chatting to a couple caravaning around ,Peter and Linda from South Australia at the rest stop  i stayed at and wasn't too motivated to get going. Still off i went and grinded my way to Nanuturra R/H and arrived relieved that it was the longest  distance i would have to do from now on. Entering the road house i found out the rooms which just consisted of a bed where 95 bucks so i elected to rent a bit of lawn for ten bucks. After buying a drink and looking at the menu board i asked why have they  got the phone numbers after the food. Turns out there the prices, jeeesssuuuusss. $20.50 for a chicken burger with the lot. I asked ,do you leave the feathers on and the feet too. I settled for a "T" bone and 600mil choc milk for $41,bargain. But the biggest shock was when i asked the Truckee in there how far the next road house was knowing it was only 71kms because i just wanted to hear it ,like music to my ears as though i have finally conquered the big stretchers. When he said 240kms i fell down on both knees and grabbed his leg and screamed, NO. After he calmed me down, and told me the Barradale R/H burnt down in 1998. I was shattered and had to re program the positive thoughts back into the brain to enable me to get through this.
Had a shower and then the meal which i thought included a free ice cream with your main but when i went to get mine the lady said, computer says no, because I'm not a fat miner living on the premises with free board and food and earning about $2000 a week . I'm just a bike rider sweating it out and paying through the nose for everything i touched. I am a believer in karma. After ,i went and spoke to some N.Z people for a while and went to bed to get an early start  the next day  to show this long distance, who's boss.
Day 115 woke to the sound of the alarm at 5.30am  and new i wasn't going anywhere in a hurry. I was stiff from the day before and i thought i should hang around till the wind starts and then drops like it did the day before. Had a big breakfast alongside the fat miners who where scoffing it down as though there about to do the 240kms bike ride in record time. Then off to the toilet to do number two's as you do. Big problem which i had not had before, major blockage from not drinking enough water i suspect. Spent ages in there pulling faces and nearly popping my eye balls out with no luck. Next minute there's a cue ,saying things like, whats going on in there. I wiped nothing and flushed nothing and opened the door to see two guys not looking  happy, and i said "not a lot".
I came outside and saw one of the N.Z guys from the night before and told him what my predicament was and he looked concerned enough to tell his wife and she came over with some prunes which i scoffed down. Everybody left the camp area and i thought what the heck, i might as well go too. Sold my house to the road house, and bought enough food for two days. Rode off thinking that , here i am leaving late, constipated and just not ready for this long distance. About 20kms down the road there was movement at the station, i quickly threw the bike down  , down with the pants and pointed my freckle towards a mountain and sprayed my full name on it, Grantis Maximus Aluwishus Boodinghill Kelly. After that i rode like Lance Armstrong, well sort of. Did half the 240kms and set up camp in the scrub.
Day 116 was a grind against the wind to Minilya R/H and ended up arguing straight away when getting there because they had no unpowered  sites ,only powered lawn sites . I was trying to tell them nicely after a hard day that i just won't use the power and just call it an unpowered site. It worked and all was good. That day i met another cyclist, Clement ,a 21 yr old from a suburb near Paris. He was riding to Broome then maybe go onto Darwin. I told him that he will die if he attempts it as the second hand bike he bought for 50 bucks down Fremantle didn't look up to scratch and his knowledge of the distances and the heat and wind where non existent. Still each to their own. He did agree as he had already caught the bus on some of the earlier long stretchs.
He said every things fine because he gets what he needs off the caravan people.

Had to take a photo of his legs that propel him , he laughs, at the most 90kms in a day.
Hiro , not a worry in the world, i think or as he says, i think tho.lol
Also met this Japanese guy with a lisp, Hiro, who was hitch hiking out in the middle of nowhere who had been dropped off by some caravan people who wanted to camp at a rest area nearby.
Day 117 again sold another house to buy more food at Minilya R/H to scramble the leg to Carnarvon and it turned out going alright till the wind picked up and made it very difficult to even pedal but ended up getting there around 6pm and booked into a room and had my shower and meal.
At this stage i have now 900 kms to go in the time frame of 10 days , so I'm on track and confident that it will be O.K even if the wind blows a gale against me some of the time because i can slip kms in when it doesn't
900kms to go,so hang in there guys.

SO

John Aggie does Sue know about this or shouldn't i be putting this on the blog.Sue this sign was 250kms North of Carnarvon

Jim always loved reminiscing about Paraburdoo.
Not long and the mission will be over, take care

  1. Thank god for the detailed update on the digestive system. And I thought the riding was your biggest worry.
Glad to see the roadhouse/caravan park people are skimming the poor bastards, now WA is a rich mining state.
    Bluce would love their philosophy.
Wait until it all runs out.

  2. It will run out after the Gillard Government finishes off investors coming into Australia...The prices seem reasonable for food and lodging, they compare to europe (broke) and the UK (also broke).

Slow down big guy or you will have to camp up on the corner of Pearl Prde till the BBQ gets lit on Sunday...

Please fill the blogg up with arrival photos for some of us still working in the world... :-)

  3. Linds you would have no idea how little this State govt has done to promote the tourist trade as far as caravan people go. N.T leave this State for dead as far as looking after the little guy and WA suppose to have the money. Every caravan returning home spreads the word about there experience.Shame Colin.

  5. Hi Grant. Good to see youve reached the coast just north of us. Great to see that the white ants and termites along the way havn`t diminished your sense of humour, maybe even increased it. I hate paying more then $ 3 for a steak in Balga.( Balga by the way means grass tree in Nunghar ) Enjoy the bizzare road house antics , great fodder for the book, I`ll help you edit if you want. I got the bike, Apollo fold up. It`s been parked up in the loungeroom for the past 3 days. Its so new and cute, I just go up to it every 30 mins and smell the tyres. I dont want to take it outside and get mud and sand on it, its still a vijin. At least I`ll be able to fold it up and put it in a taxi if the going gets too tough along the coast on the 19 th.Were doing a trial run this weekend, I`ll try and avoid the food outlets. Regards, Mike.

  8. I finished work today and as usual got on the train to come home. Settled in and as per the addictive habit I started to check the blog....thats when it all fell apart. I was laughing so much I was getting the "look" from people and had to gather myself. One of the funniest blogs I have read yet..which I was still laughing about as I was getting into may car. I don't know why I am telling you all this because if you have read the blog you will know what I am talking about.

The Doc's sister and brother in law are visiting at the moment and they have been able to catch up with your blog tonight. Off to organise Grace's bicycle tomorrow...the excitement is building for the 19th August...have we got any more takers for the day???

  9. Go Grant, go. Too late now for this piece of advice but a small amount of psyllium husks or Metamucil work wonders when those pesky blockages occur. It must have been such a relief when it all gave way! An old fella from Rainbow once gave this piece of advice when relieving yourself on the side of the road "put a bag over your head, so no one will know who it is as all a###holes look the same"!

Thanks Tom,fellow rider.Tell you what, its been a bit of a bitch of a stretch down the coast without the the internet and also looking at the Perth distance all the time instead of concentrating on little steps makes it a bit harder too. Tried to ring you at Overlander r/h but got your Mothers message, Joy and i will talk to you when i get back on the 19th AUG Take care and may the tail winds blow you to the shithouse.

  13. I'm back again, sitting in an airport on my way to India thinking of you and thinking about midnight i'll be pointing my Chicken curry and Naan towards the South East toasting you while you are sleeping in your little tent dreaming of next Sunday being back in the 'real world' putting up with 'real' people instead of battling nature, the weather and wind.

I'm visiting as soon as I get back to Australia one day, shake your hand, sit on your bike, get my photo taken and say to the world, "I was with him every inch of the way".... We may even put it on your blogg as one of your best fans.....

Better go, they are paging me, hope the cheese and grapes suit the wine...

Sorry you were discriminated against for not being fat miner, that musta been tough being told -no ice cream after riding all dem K,s but these matters will fade as you reach the city limits as the feeling of massive accomplishment washes over you.
Joy will have plenty of sweet treats waiting for you!!

    1. Yey,have to slow it down now to arrive on that special day. Its a bit hard to do smaller distances than i have to get to where i am at the moment because you haven't really got anywhere worth staying from Carnavon to Northampton.

Happy birthday Ella and Jack for next week. Hope mum and dad are buying you expensive presents,if not why not.
