day 118,119 & 120

Day 118 was the day i left the Carnavon Gateway Hotel and proceeded to I.G.A (8 o'clock open ) for a food supply stock up and then off to Wooramel R/H some 120kms away. After reaching there and still having a bit of time and energy left in me i decided to pedal till i had enough and camp where ever. About 15 km out, a car stopped on the other side of the road and  a guy got out and waved me over to come to his car and i thought, here we go. But all was good, it was Leon and his clan offering me oranges and a cold drink. Even tried to give me some sap ,or lollie as he called it but Tina said that it would give me the shits if your not used to it. (could of done with it a few days before) Leon was expressing how much he admired me riding a push bike around and just was overwhelmed with it all. Leon Galby and his Partner Tara are from the Wooramel/Carnavon area along with Tara's sister in law Tina. I rode off thinking ,now theres a bunch of guys who are living life and getting on with it.
Tara with big Leon and the kids with me on the end..

Tina posing with me.
Kept going a little while longer and came across a scenic lookout rest stop, so that will do me for the night i thought. Rode up and camped next to a nice Dutch couple camping out of there car, Kirsten and Rutger. Both 29yrs old and have been in Australia for 18 months travelling and said that there favourite spot was  Kakadu because it was like a summary of Australia all in one spot. They only have one week to go and there off back home. Very pleasant to talk to and to spend some time with.
Rutger and his darling Kirsten.

Me standing on the hill lookout
Also on the scenic hill was a gathering of gnomes with names written on them representing peoples spirits who had died over the years and placed to look out over the  view.
Back view of the guys looking over toward Shark Bay.

Happy buggers.
DAY 119 started with packing up my tent and saying goodbye to the Dutch couple and heading to the Overlander R/H. On my way though i was stopped by Laurel and Brian who i had met the day before at  Wooramel R/H and they gave me a frozen pasta dinner and invited me into there mobile home for a cold orange juice. Brian is 84 and Laurel is 80 but both in good health. Brian used to run marathons and i think was right up there with the big boys after listening to him. He was genuinely impressed with my bike ride which i was happy to hear  coming from him. Great people, and to be getting around like that together all the way from Victoria is fantastic.
Brian and Laurel beside there motor home
Continued onto the Overlander R/H and then onto the Billabong R/H. Still with time and energy did another 45kms into the dark to a 24hr rest area and set up my tent and had that beautiful pasta dish Laurel gave me and then retired to bed.
Day 120 was going to be a  long ride to Binnu R/H and off i went excited as i knew Dean, my plumbing mate was going to be on the road driving to Shark Bay and we would be catching up with each other somewhere. Sure enough there he was with his best mate , Flavio driving and Deano asleep.
Deano on the left who was supposed to be keeping an eye out  for me , has just woken from a deep sleep.

Flavio , Deans personal driver posing for the blog and me too.
Next port of call, Binnu R/H. And typical when i get there their shut (Sunday)so i have to keep going to Northampton other wise i will have to ration the five pieces of bread i have left for the whole afternoon and night before they open in the morning. Another 37kms on and i finally find humans and buildings which accommodate people. So i booked myself in to the so called Motel here and it started to pour down with rain Had my standard counter meal and was told by the cook after ordering soup ,steak and sticky date pudding i have a big appetite. I wonder why i thought.
Well for your information everybody, i have 477 kms to go and 6.5 days to do it in which equates to 73.3kms per day.Nice to have only that to do as bad weather is on its way. I also have swollen leg at the bottom of my shin (left) above the foot which has come out of nowhere. Maybe it  could of been a spider bite.Voltaren cream doesn't do anything. But don't worry the 19th is the day and i will now let you know the programme
1. Meet at the Sorrento car park 12.45pm for stretching and warm up lead by Doc and Jackie in Lycra.
2. I arrive with Yern 12.55pm and exchange handshakes, hugs and tears of JOY.
3.  1pm we take off at a pace Grace can manage and smile at everybody as though we are enjoying it.
4.  We arrive at Pearl Headquarters around 6pm, no make that 2.30pm and collapse on the back lawn as though it hurt.
5. We exchange more handshakes and hugs with the bastards who didn't ride and listen to them pump my tyres up and hear all the excuses why they couldn't ride ,enough by 4pm
6.  Presentation of awards, such as best Blogger and best Host on the trip plus special mention of the sponsors..5MIN (Bruce ,Linds, Cyclops, Jackie ,Doc ,Frz ,Jono etc etc ,I wonder!!!
7.  Speeches by myself and anybody else who likes the sound of there own voice.55min
8. Wrapped up by 5pm and everybody out ,because Pearl and i are going to bed for a 12 hour spooning and squeezing session:-)

Don't forget everybody and anybody is invited to the cycling extravaganza and welcome back for a coffee and one biscuit. Lets make Jim proud one more time.
I'm finally flying with the Eagles.

This  Govt thinks of everything, even roadside power stations.

With the wild flowers blooming we shall now call the North West Coastal Highway the "Jim Kelly Memorial Drive.'
Bye for now,
Grant

  1. Hi Grant great blog, home leg now all very exciting, I am not riding in - your mum and I will be at Pearl pde part of the greet & meet team organising the cups and saucers for the afternoon tea. All good catch you soon

  2. Is that power point REALLY working?
Couldn't happen in Victoria. There'd be a shed, a WiFi power box for money to go into, a man checking you'd signed up for power, and a bush fire nearby that the power point had started.
Great that there are still nice people to make your day. Not long now.

  3. Ha ha! loved the gnomes. Didn't leave a bit of Jim there did you? I thought the view was vastly spectacular.
Had the weekend in Horsham catching up with Adam and Tanya with babe in tow. It was a real Harris show, with Terry, Lins, Glenda, Marty and Adam flying the flag for the second Harris generation, then 8 of the offspring from the next generation (including Jaimee), then 6 babies from the fourth generation. Great Grandma Peg presided over it all!
Well it looks like you can do a few short trips in the next few days. Though I see there is a southerly wind at present, maybe finally time for a sleep-in??
Anyway, wish I was there for Sunday but will be sending lots of positive thoughts westward!

  4. Yes,since knowing i'm so close the body has shut down a bit and is only grinding through the winds with habit. Thanks for the positive thoughts,i can feel them coming through.

  6. Mate the body can shut down all it likes but it won't stop the mind from dragging me over the line. This reminds me when my old bull terrior,Jim ,got ran over by two cars after each other and his leg was sticking out in the wrong direction but when he saw the Vet building he still made a run for it, bless him. Mind over pain when you need to ,grasshopper
Don't worry photos will be taken on the day and posted as soon as possible, probably with Mike wrapped up in his fold up cheap Kmart bike at the hospital.
The leg is wierd how i can pedal but cant walk on it.Maybe now for the rest of my life i have to ride a bike like being in a wheel chair, jjjjeeeessssuuuussss.

  8. It's only 17:00 hrs here, 19:30 whereever you are?

Just finished an Indian Lunch with all the trimmings, thought of you and will think of you a lot more sitting on the loo tomorrow morning!

Slow down movin' man or better still get home friday, shower, shave, 'spoon' (whatever that is?) and go out the road Sunday morning and stick with your plan, that's what Jimbo would do!

I really want to see the photos on the blogg of your home coming......

What an experience and for the rest of this year all your friends will be arriving to stay with you, thats a thought, come to India and ride your bike with the other 1.2 billion of them...

  9. G'day Bluce, no i am going to just take it easy and slow it down and make home on the Sunday the 19th as planned so as i can recover as i go on the road. If i go for it and race home against this wind ,would just be going against the whole idea of enjoying the journey when i can . From the very start of my announcement of the arrival time i have planned to stick to it so people can get organised to ride at that time without change . If only a few show after all this planning it will be worth it as a memory for mine and there life.

Definition of Spooning......Laying on your side with your loved one in front , both with knees bent like a spoon. Um ar...Pearls are out like a fork in our case.

  10. Hiya Grant - absolutely amazing mate, you're a different bloke now, with a huge achievement under your belt. I'll try and get there Sunday and wave the flag for Kelvin and Tracey ( who can't make it. I was thinking of jogging alongside you ( if you're riding at 10 - 12k per hour)back to scarborough. but if you think its better I'll bring the bike and join the entourage. :-)
    Brendon! - Kelvins mate.

  18. Well I've studied my 'hybrid' view in close detail. I have looked at all the towns between where you are now and home and have settled on a place I have never heard of - Jurian. Kinda cute name. Also it's not far away, you could get there easily enough and take a break. I am being motherly now, but the foot condition is keeping me awake at night. If you stop for a break at Jurian, and you hate not doing anything physical, I see that you could swim out to Boullanger island. Now that would be a challenge worthy of a champion such as yourself. Or, to get the foot going again, how about a game of golf? The course looks very appealing. I could go on, but that's the point of all this google map stuff. We can give you advice. I's sure I spend as much time on the bloody thing as you do. So i'm keeping my fingers crossed for the blogger award for the most advice given over the last months, and yes it was probably unwanted and gratuitous, given I've had an armchair ride, but it has been well meant.
So, there you go, I've given you my 2 bob's worth: a day in Jurian for R&R.
If you don't take it, I will as always follow every move with interest!

  19. Funny you should mention Jurien Bay, thats where Kathy lives, the lady i met way back and she said i could stay at her house if i wanted to. I might take her up on that offer if i can find her phone number somewhere. If i can't i'm sure the cops will know where she lives. Tried the white pages as i know her second name but must be silent. As far as the blogger awards goes there is a special edition of "The Blog "on Saturday so read all about it then.

  20. As much as I would love to join the ride in on Sunday, I am not going to make it across. But I was thinking that maybe we should get onto Cycling Central, SBS and see if they could send their motorbikes and cameramen to televise this auspicious cycling event so those of us in the East don't miss out on the action. It would be great if Mike Tomolaris and Phil Ligget could be the commentators. I am excited for Jackie and Doc having a go at the tandem. Should be great. Hope someone remembers to take lots of photos that can be put up on the blog.

Yes we will all do our best to get some photos on the day and post them as quickly as possible. We have a Fun Run in Perth and the Eagles are playing at 1.10pm so we might not have too many show. The plan of individuals riding for peoplei n the East was a shambles so now everybody riding is riding for who ever and where ever.lol

  21. Sitting here in Mumbai on Independance day, police everywhere, hijack threats and just me walking amongst them going to the office, I said to a nice police man this morning "Happy Independance day", he just looked at me and said "How's the hero going", I said, "he will be home on Sunday", he said "I'll have a chappatie for him".
    Better go,
    Cheers...

I was on the radio this morning and Paul the interviewer gave the ride on Sunday a good plug so who knows there could be thousands.

Back in my Hotel, no bombs, i think independance day went well, a bit scary as there is as many people in Mumbai as there is in all of Australia, in fact their Prime minister looks just like Ms. Gillard, well the same sort of beard, LoL

What I'd give to be at Pearl Parade, in the Parade with Pearl.

But I can assure you I'll be thinking of the both of you, hope the legs better? It could have been a Bush Tick? You better get dipped before you get home to that beautiful girl of yours plus you don't want Joy getting any ticks...... LoL

I leave "Incredible India" tonight, back to Malaysia and fibre optic internet connection to watch the 'special' announcement on Saturday and the "Arrival" on Sunday which btw will be the end of Ramadan, so that's 1 billion muslims having a bloody big party and a lone bike rider arriving home, any chance of streaming??

Be safe on the last leg (excuse the pun)and i hope the good leg can carry you through the final breaking of the tape....

  33. I imagine now with the end in sight you must be experiencing mixed emotions. What an amazing feat you will have achieved and what wonderful memories you will forever have to reflect upon! Not sure though how the rest of us will cope with the inevitable withdrawal symptoms...what with having to cope without our daily hit. Talking about hits, did you ever imagine in your wildest dreams that you would reach 20000?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No Lorraine, i'm not experiencing anything at the moment. I think its because the heads spinning and can't focus on any one thing at the moment. Hey , that sounds like mixed emotions.
And the achievement of riding around Australia will build i think later when i rest and have a bit of time to reflect ,if that makes sense.
And about the hits you would have to say the" tracker" was the driver of that, glad i had it to show a lot of new places to people they had never heard of before. Well done also Lorraine for contributing in making it a success so far. x

  34. You drove up there in a "Corvette"?
Not the red one I can just remember??

As you say, "What went wrong?"
    And Bluce says, "Nothing..."
And I say, "It's not the end, it's the journey." ( Well, perhaps it wasn't me that said that.)
Congrats on the journey...may there be many more like this one`.

But i couldn't do it to my supporters and look them in the eye on Sunday. Pat can be ruthless sometimes.lol

  36. Well, 'Hybrid' has finally let me down. I can tell you're in a nice place in Prince Street. I can see how close you are to the ocean. But, unfortunately, I can't see if there is a ledge anywhere at all. A few rocks, checked out the view on 'Terrain' and it there is a ledge somewhere on the stoney part of the beach then it's not high enough to show up.
So, you will have to satisfy my curiosity. Is there actually a ledge in Ledge Point?
