Day 108 &109

Day 108 started off just great as i met a couple of 75year old ladies (Kath and Dot) in the next donga over from mine when i was having breaky and they where great fun to talk to and put a smile on my dial. Hey anybody who laughs at my jokes makes me happy. There off exploring the gorges further North. Kath has offered me a warm bed and a shower at her place in Jurien Bay when i pass by, so that makes her the first complete stranger to actually offer on the whole trip . I think i will take her up on that as i could see she was happy if i did and i would appreciate it.

Off i went fully loaded with water and food as it was another long distance of 287kms between Roebuck plains r/h and Sandfire r/h to cover but knew it would take more than the day as there was a stiff cross breeze. About 100 kms into the ride i thought i had come across an oasis in the sticks. A fruit a veg shop run by Robin (no not Batman's Robin) which also sold cold drinks , unbelievable. I made the mistake of asking her where the produce came from and she went on and on telling me every item in the shop of its origin. I was looking for a sharp knife to cut my wrists but its not her fault ,i don't think she would too many customers
Robin at her fruit and veg oasis in the sticks. She looks a bit like my mate Gaz. By the way i didn't take that butternut pumpkin with me.
Eventually i tore myself away from there and a few kms up the road i get stopped by the German girls i had met at the rest stop a couple of hundred kms back and they where offering me water and wanted to take my photo.
Ingrid,me and the saucy Irene, look out

Irene,Ingrid and the boss Waltraud are all married
Back on the bike and the sun going down i decided to put the Batman thermals on again and do some night riding around 6 o'clock but just when i was about to get on the bike i was approached by three guys in a 4 wheel drive and asked me what I'm up too. I told them and the main guy ,Mat who i swore could of been John Wayne's double, said come on down to the station a couple of kms for  a meal and relax.  The offer was too good to refuse so that's what happened. About 10 guys and 5 girls all worked at this sweet corn and melon farm as pickers which you thought never existed from the main road.
Some of the workers, Thomas the Irishman, Nick from Melbourne and Mat the Boss (Big John Wayne) from Dubbo the morning i left

Even the dog wanted to come with me,he loved chasing shadows.
Day 109 and still 120 kms to Sandfire, so away i go and bugger me dead, i run into a bunch of camels
First there trying to hide from me, then

there in front of me,then
there off and racing everywhere with toilet paper hanging out of the big ones mouth, yuk.

The remaining ride into Sandfire was hard going as the body is weak from the amount of riding I've done lately and the landscape is not that inspiring as the photo shows

Least its not raining and hilly like that bloody Victoria.
On arriving at the Sandfire r/h i have managed to acquire luxury accommodation at 40 bucks for the night and changed my back tyre as the old one had it.
Bluddy looxury mate

Another room visitor.

Well ,i think  i can give  you my plan of attack into Perth.  The people who are interested in riding with me and Jim on the last day, the time i would like to arrive at  the Sorrento Surf Club  car park is 1pm on Sunday the 19th August. This is the first point of call and as we head home anybody can join in on the way
along the cycle path to Scarborough if they don't want to do the entire distance. Please understand that you will not be shot or tortured if you don't show but maybe you might later think perhaps it would of been a buzz just to do it as a novelty.

Progress map........ 2000kms to go in 18 days works out at approx 110 kms average , cool , just in case South Westerlies are in town

Bye for now

Grant.

  2. We had a great laugh here this morning, Charlie, my offsider was looking at your latest photo's and said, "For a guy that's ridden all that distance he's still got a fair amount of weight on" I said, "That's Robin, selling fruit and cold drinks in the middle of the desert", he then siad, "I don't have my glasses on", I'm glad i didn't show him your photo of getting out of Mataranka springs, he wouldn't have needed his glasses! :-) :-). See I didn't say anything about the water being freezing. :-)

Love the blogg, photo's and all the folk you have met on your travels, it makes me want to give it a try, I mean maybe talk to some of the folk I meet on my travels, there again, No!

When you get to karratha, look out to sea, I spent most of my youth sitting about 120 kms offshore. Oh Woe is me!!!

    Keep em' coming.

  3. I'm puzzled by the tape around the front part of the seat.

Have the police been told about the Sorrento plan? What if half the bloggers arrive to join you?

Remember it's not a race and the 19th does not have to be set in stone. If you do hit winds, stop.
There's always the next marathon ride to think of.

    1. Ok mate the tape is to keep the silocone padding from moving around. The more riders the better. Mate ,the 19th is set in stone as far as i'm concerned, arriving on a weekend makes sense for the people who work LINDS to enable those who would like to ride jim and i home along the ocean cycle way starting 1pm 19 August from Sorrento carpark.

  4. There was an article in the last Weekend Australian about Russell Bathard, a cyclist who rides through the outback every year on a solo and unsupported cycling odyssey. I will cut it out and send it over to Pat to keep for you to read when you get home. It was comparing him to Olympians and to quote "What he shares with our Olympians is a sense of focus. For Bathard, riding a bike through such extreme country requires stripping away all else and focusing purely on survival. "when you're doing something like this, everything gets stripped back to the basics," he said. "I have four things I focus on every day: water, food, shelter and the state of the bike"". Bet you can relate to this.
Enjoy the flat riding even if there is wind - it's got to be better than climbing hills!

  5. love the camels. Have never seen them on the road like that, perhaps it's one of the perks of riding quietly rather than racing by in a car.
I was pleased to hear you got an invite to the farm. I had given the map a good squiz that night on my fave 'Hybrid' and thought, 'why would Grant go so far off the road to set up camp. Looks like he's actually at a farm house, I hope they're not making him work for his food/camp site?' good to hear it was just another chance meeting that ended well. Heard a girl at school today say to a teacher, 'you're just giving me an excuse to knock your 'effing' head off, you c... So it's easy to be disallusioned by the human race at times, glad you are giving us the other side. You are actually meeting nice people. That's why I love reading the blog, never know what's next.
    Good winds!

  13. When I go to the map, I can see why those famous mining men want to dig up our land and sell it...there seems to be iron everywhere...well, rust anyway!
How are you doing getting the red grime from your body? Do the lotions I gave you keep your skin moist?
Keep getting pics of your night stops as from the "air" they look pretty basic!

They pinch bicycles there and everything else.

Oh well i can't see where you stopped off for the night, jude's probably got a better tracker than me?

  16. Just checked where the bloody hell you are now and want to know how the bloody hell you do it. Been away on school camp for the last three days without any technology and can't believe the progress you have made in such a short time. Truly amazing!

  17. It might be a short time for you Lorraine but try riding for three days and see how long it becomes. lol . No ,thanks for the encouragement , i need it so close to home and this area is probably the most depressing ive been to yet but am punching through it

    ReplyDelete
  18. Now last time i commented i made a simple request asking people to say if they are going to ride on the last day so i can pair you up with an Eastern Stater and nobody has responded. Dont worry, i wont let up till this happens as i am one to persist .lol Oh ,Joy will be riding for Bluce if he is not in town

  19. I look like being in India when you break the ribbon, my heart will be with you and i'll go outside and tell the closest rickshaw driver to take me around the block. I would be honoured to be represented by the fabulous Joy, riding in alongside you, up wind I'm sure but never the less right there!

Keep powering on, it gets better the cloder to home.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes ,talking about upwind of Joy, the bike picked up a familiar scent yesterday and it took off like Casey Stoner but 200mtrs up the road it realised it was only a dead kangaroo. Smelt good though :-)

  21. Hi Grant

The Doc and I booked our tandem for Sunday 19th August at 1pm...Grace has just arrived for a coffee and she has sorted her bike for the day also ... so there are three people who will definitely be riding you and Grandad in.

Can others please start letting us know (ie committing to it on the blog) if you are in so that we can know whether to wait for you otherwise there is a risk we will head off with out you.

  25. Hi Grantus Maximus ridus bikeus. Great that your going so well on the homeward stretch. You will have to start to reduce altitude soon as you get closer to the landing strip. We will be at Sorrento to meet you with either 2 small bikes or 1 big one. The hills along the coast might kill us but we`ll do our best It will be a great feeling for you when you see the indian Ocean again. You timed the ride to perfection as its just beginning to warm up after a cold winter, the 19 th will be a great day. We`ll keep reading the blog. lol, Mike and Cindy.

  26. Gosh, I haven't seen anything more desolate than the country you've been riding through. I thought the road from Mt Isa to the NT was bad but there is really nothing out there where you are now! Even if they took the footage for Google maps in the middle of summer it couldn't be much better now. Salt bush is still salt bush. Looks like you refueled at a roadhouse and kept going. Hope you stocked up big time, looks a long way to the next roadhouse. You might have to get a drink at the Robe river if you need water, I see there's a campground there.
Wow! Will be thinking of you tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, as Macbeth said. you will be ecstatic to see Canarvon when you finally get there. Just one kilometre at a time, that's how you've got this far.
I would love someone to ride for me, maybe Jackie and Doc as two people might be able to go at a pace that would keep up, I don't think I could do it. Wish I could be there.
