Day 14 to Day 21

Day 14.Left Esperance about 6.30am. Pam was upset but what could i do.Her standing in  her jarmies waving goodbye was sad.Couldn't hear what she was saying but could tell by her lips moving that she was saying "don't go Grant".Felt great after Pam let me stay for two sleepovers. She fed me and supplied me with sandwiches, chocolate bars and fruit. I was still eating silver side and pickle sandwiches almost to Balladonia.Peddled to an area some 120 kms just past Salmon Gums and set up my tent and i met a fellow called Paul in the camping ground with 4 sausage dogs. The runt was called Hamburger because he thought he was tough and ten foot tall. Hamburger was stuffed after a big day on the road and he couldn't keep his eyes open and was lying like a seal.Soon as Paul went to bed guess who's down under the sheets while the other three guarding  the caravan door,no not me,Hamburger.
Sausages

Hamburger

Day 15. Woke and said goodbye to Paul and headed to Norseman into a northerly breeze.Arrived around lunch time and opened my laptop up and Bluce is right on my tail."your in Norseman i take it for the night" jeessuuss.Rested and made a dash for Balladonia and got about 30 km and camped

Puncture time

Some cyclist who didnt take enough water

Alan from Wagga Wagga.
Day 16. Headed toward Balladonia with a slight n.w wind and arrived in Balladonia at around 2pm after having two punctures. Rested and rode off to set myself up for the start of the Australia's longest straight road stretch 146.5kms. Just before i got there disaster struck, the sun was going down and when i tried my light it didn't work. I just made it to the camp at the start of the longest straight and started setting up camp in the dark. And then a truck pulled into the camping ground next to me and Alan got out and said Howdy and lifted his custom trailer side door up ,turned the Genny on and the place lite up like a Christmas tree. He made me a cuppa and heated my burger which i had bought some 30kms back. Tried to fire up my bike light with no luck.He was on his way to Barbagallo Raceway with his Mustang and another Mustang for his mate plus a Zephyr car.Work shop and lounge all custom built,if my mate Bob Richards my truck mechanic was there he would be spitting and wetting himself with excitement. He was pulling it with a Western Star truck, not bad for a 66yr old, living the dream.

Day17.What a day on that stretch of road, headwind all the way and thinking all the time about the light .When i got to Caiguna Road House, there i rang Joe Peci(now straight) he immediately went into action about ringing for a replacement light ,i found a Truckee Mick and Daryn going to Perth and returning in a couple of days. Joe rang Mick and delivered the light to him to bring back on Saturday with other goodies.

Day 18 Did my weekly radio show in the morning and proceeded to Cocklebiddy Road house where i met a sweet Taiwan girl on her last day working there ,Feebee. She said she would call you Joy to say i was fine.Talked for a while and took off to camp in the bush.

Day 19 Off to Madura Pass Road House where i met  Martin who has been travelling by Recumbent bike since 2009 with a 4 wheel trailer. He says he only does about 40 KS a day that's when he does cycle ,at the moment he is working at the road house for a couple of weeks. The bike has 81 gears. Again took off and camped 30 k up the road.

Day 20 Set off for Mundrabilla Road House and met Steve who's cycling the world which means you need to do 18000 miles, hes going from Brisbane to Perth as a leg plus other countries.Sorry Joy but his on his way ,just for two days as he wants to get to Asia soon. Then i was stopped by Peter a freelance reporter who reminded me of the guy in Superman from the Daily Planet, who wants to do a story on me.He took notes a about 100 photos.Later i was stopped by the police for not wearing my helmet and there gave me a warning, there where o.k. Felt like John Rambo getting hassled by the local Sheriff and i think the police woman wanted to take me in and hose me down.Lucky to get my thermals off now ,the hairs are starting to grow through them and mat themselves together. Reached Mundrabilla early afternoon and sat and watched the gust of wind and decided to stay ,because i met Steve whos an ex navy guy travelling Australia by car and he was easy to chat and we got on well.

Day 21.Parked the bike out on the verge of highway one at 6.45 because big Mick and Daryn are supposed to be comming through with my light and goodies at 7am.  Come 7am and there they were ,majic, with everything, but too heavy so i got them to drop it off at Border Village and i will get it when i get there. So let me say this ,Joe, your a ledgend, We already have a Mr Fantastic ,so we a going to call you Mr Fantastico.Well done to Joe, Mick and Daryn, one big highlite of my trip. I am now in South Australia at Border Village .Weather is great and room is a dump but hey 50 bucks, sweet.

Kent, in trouble from Japan ,his bearings have gone in his back hub. I thought i had trouble. But he is still smiling , i  think he is in denile.

Daryn and Mick ,even said any time between Adelaide and Perth give us a call and we will deliver.

  2. Amazing! Life on the road is full of surprises. Joy, a suggestion? Perhaps you should head out to the outskirts of the city, put up big signs and arrows to: Joy's Biker Rest-house. Then they won't even need maps and you can sit back and wonder, 'who's going to drop by today?'

  3. You feel that the story so far is "all over the place"?
No, it's great. I have read the greatest writers in history and this is right up there with them. I'd say it was Dickensian or Tolstoy, in fact. Great tone and "voice."
All those people you have met, being kind and helpful. Bearings gone in the back axle, for that poor bugger, hey? Now that is real bad!!
Half a state gone, until you see it again from the North, and now the rest will get "left behind" as you go thru them.

  6. Well into South Australia, I see. And Westerlies at last.
I can hardly keep up with the tracker, you are moving so bloody fast out on the Nullabor.
It still scares me to see how far to go...

    1. Linds ,you cannot look too far into this mission. The way to look at is the way someone builds a house, brick by brick.Do not let negative thoughts enter into the blog.Be positive

  7. Not only watching you like a Hawk, but could see where you went off on to the left side of the Highway to camp for the night, didn't want to part with the $1500 US to get a close up of your tent. I'm into the weather patterns also, Lins is right but you look like you missing most of the rain that was coming up from the West.
    Love your Work....

    1. Your on the money about the rain, not much yet. Punched into 600kms of head wind till today ,this afternoon turned N/E and had a sprint to the roadhouse and just fell over the line on dark.Got to get off this bloody nullabor. The word Nullabor is an Aboriginal name meaning "have a dump and let your toilet paper paper fly around"Funny how its all on the left side of the road though,i think the eastern staters got the shits from the west aussies and went home.I think i might go and buy a badge to say" i crossed the Nullabor AGAINST THE WIND"

  8. Well I did wish for the wind to be at your back Grant, but by the look of it, day 22 had the wind beneath your wings. Looks like you flew to Nullabor roadhouse. What a feeling that must have been. Pass any cars? It must be a little short of 200kms, hell of a ride! Lucky there isn't a thing to look at out there, you wouldn't have had time. Hope you are sleeping well tonight! Looks like northerlies tomorrow so that might bring you back to normality.

  9. Grant you are a dreamer - Pam was probably glad to see the back of you????????? lol Had dinner with Pat tonight alls well - cheers and take care and put your helmet on

  10. Funny you should say that there wasnt much to look at but it was an incredible feeling 30 kms out from the road house, body pumping with adrenilan, nose and mouth snorting in air like Black Caviar, complete body sweat happening and the magnifacent colour of the sunset on my left and immediatly followed by the rising of a full moon on my right as though it rose straight out the earth.Had to be there.

  11. Adventure Adventure Adventure. Oh well of to work.

  12. Here's a new word for the trip diary: Perigee. As in 'perigee moon'. Because the moon is at its closest to the earth for the year, or several years, it's 14% larger and 30% brighter than it usually is. Too think you got to see it on the Nullarbor, ahead of you, rising up to light the road ahead! Ahhhh! That experience would have been on every stargazer, hippy, earth-hugger wish list. 'Had to be there,' might be the understatement of the trip.

  13. Grant, once again great pics and stories to keep us all up to date, pity the Nullabor Nymph is now in a nursing home and the Knowles family scared away all the ufo's you could of made a fortune out of those pics. Awesome effort, hope this weather doesn't get to you. Cheers

I know I,m not allowed to mention Qld yet but we did have a mighty big wild pig stalking about out at work last week and I wondered whether you,d pig proofed your tent yet-as if you havnt got enough to worry about with the King Browns.
Sounds like you well settled into your journey now Bro,enjoy the great state of South Oz.

  15. Great stuff - tick off WA and Nullarbor as major milestones completed. Looks like you are back into relative civilisation with paddocks showing up on the map and maybe a few more creature comforts, if you want them. But will they let you past quarantine at Ceduna without hosing you down first? Anyway, lots of good yarns to tell on your radio show tomorrow, can't wait.

I agree with your, you have to have small targets everyday and not the whole journey (which I know you are doing )
And a n appropriate quote ,by Mao Tse Tung at the start of the long march across china with his revolutionary army
" Every long journey is started by taking the first step "

  21. We see by your tracker that you are at Smoky Bay. We called in there on our way back from Perth 2 years ago but ended up staying at Streaky Bay which the kids really loved. Tim & I enjoyed the $6 a dozen for fresh oysters. Oh Yeah! You are making great progress on your trip. We are going to come and see you when you hit the Victorian coastline.

  22. Hey love, phone's now recharged.

  23. Looks like you did almost 500kms in 3 days, phenomenal! Hope the sleep at Smoky Bay was a good one. I've been enjoying learning more about Aus geography.Have never been to Smoky Bay but it looks like you found the only shop in town. Did you really sleep near a car wrecking joint though? I really like Streaky Bay, so hope you get to stop off there for a break. Lots of great sea views coming up, get the camera ready. Hopefully you will have time in a few days to upload some at Port Lincoln. Now if the NBN would just hurry up.....

May the Wednesday northerlies blow you down that coastline.

    1. No Jude they wanted 80 bucks and the way i felt i could sleep anywhere so back onto the main road and set up the tent ,but the tracker went flat while talking to the manager of the place next to the wrecking yard accomidation. Well picked up. I think he thought i would pay anything the way i looked but not this fella, multiply that by 150 plus food and this trip will cost too much. Believe it or not the budget for this trip is 1 dollar a km times 15000.

  24. What? a Day off or have the batteries gone flat in the 'Tracker'?

What will Corporate Malaysia do now that we can't keep an eye on you?? You are the board room motivation!
