Day 42 & 43

Day 42 I woke in Loch and packed my gear ready to leave when Toddy insisted (the partner of Sybil ,the owner of the Royal Pub in Loch) to make me a nice coffee and then gave me the paper to read by the fire. Finally I then said my goodbyes and i was away. The start  of the day was terrible but an hour into it the rain cleared.Went through Foster which i think is the most Southern part of Australia that i am going. Sort of an uneventful day as i was just trying to dodge the rain and get to Yarram before i got wet. Had about 20 kms to go and bluish sky ahead with a touch of grey in front but when i turned around the meanest blackest cloud was running me down.
This is what i was heading into

This is the 80  strong Pelaton which caught me.

The rain i could see was coming with it. Immediately i went to into a frenzy as though an 80 strong Pelaton were chasing me down. It was the only way to get the most out of myself. But it didn't take long for nature to catch me and i was still 12 kms out of Yarram but lucky enough to have a house to pull into, and this is where i met Barbara. An American lady who's husband owns a Diary Farm. We chattered for about 45 minutes and she made me a nice cup of coffee with a biscuit,a true blue.It was getting dark quick and the rain had cleared so we said goodbye and i made a dash for Yarram and arrived at the Glass House Pub to book in a room. I must say it would have to be one of the best price ,service and meals i have stayed at. Nigel the owner let me use the dryer and he impressed me how he worked alongside his staff and didn't sweat the small things. A far cry from some Publicans who are just drunks in hiding.
Day 43 wasn't going to very enjoyable after i looked at myself in the mirror,i had that old man flu look, when you've aged ten years in one day. Still ,i went through the motions and took off toward Sale. My nose ran like a tap the whole way and i didn't feel the best so  i decided enough is enough when i arrived around 12noon.
Just across the road from my old pub

Booked into the Gippsland Hotel and had a couple of hours sleep and the barmaid ,Denise, gave me some lemons to make myself some lemon and honey drinks which i did. Hopefully i will feel better tomorrow to bite away a bit more of this cold, wet and 5.30 pm pitch black place. Still as President Nixon said "you don't appreciate the highest mountain unless you've been in the lowest valley"and i think this is the lowest .lol
Bloody good shop in Korumburra.

I wonder if Lance is home

Blow this photo up Linds.

Now i wonder if there watching.
Catch ya later ,might even be a rest day for me tomorrow.

Hope the cold/flu was kept at bay. Bairnsdale beckons so you could rest there if your cold persists.
I loved the pic of Colleen's map at school.
All the pics are great. Must take you a while to download pics and blog?

    1. Thanks Doctor Symster, you are so correct that the body needs its rest. I am feeling a bit low because of the flu and probably the amount of kms i have done over the last 44 days. I am going to cut my distances per day down till i reach Sydney and my mate Tony will take me under his wing,i hope.lol My logic is it's better to do something each day than nothing. But in saying that if i decide to rest before ,i will. Good to hear again from you again water boy, take it easy ,your Coach..

  8. Hello Tilack , I've been away for a few days and out of Internet range . Good to catch up on what you have been up to . I could just about feel the wet and cold you were feeling !
You are doing fantastic , enjoy one or two days rest and recharge . A long time ago when I was doing some endurance stuff (nothing like what you are doing ) I found condensed milk ( a whole can!!!) when feeling low gave you quick boost that lasted for a while .
    Ciao amico

    1. Could you Joe ( number one R.S.V.P Australia) please explain what type of endurance stuff you where doing at the time and did it include another person, if so male or female and was this condensed milk eaten by itself or with something or off something.

  9. Abandon those idle thoughts of "smelling the roses", "enjoying the sunshine" and "resting up" - get out there and turn those wheels like there is no tomorrow!!! Jackiexx

(Brothers never take their sisters advice so this is an attempt at reverse psychology)

PS I like the idea of condensed milk - might go and open a can now - hmmm best not - I am not riding 100km a day!!
PSS the nephew drove on the freeway to Thornlie yesterday...making good progress.

The only problem i had when i asked another tenant which is the way to go to Orbost and he said go straight out and go right. Thanks mate i said as i headed back toward Melbourne, never trust anybody for directions or distances, they tell you anything

  11. Thinking of you today while I was out on my regular Tuesday ride. We did not enjoy the 35km trip home into the wind. The funny thing was that we really noticed it - we were definitely pushing into it but the leaves on the trees were not moving. How can that happen we asked ourselves? I was sure that you would have a theory or two on riding and winds! Hope you have tail winds today. You are making fantastic progress. You must be able to see the border on the horizon.

    1. Perhaps the wind was constant and the leaves where beieng pushed but not moving back and forward as the wind was not surging.Yes the winds where predicted and out there somewhere but in this hilly treeey dippy windy place it dosen't seem to make much difference but psycholgocally it does it for me

  12. Victoria has given you rain, cold weather and sleet! It has also given you tail winds. Looks like you have really taken advantage of them on day 45 to reach Bellbird Creek. Given that it's in the bush I hope you get to hear them at some stage. Absolutely a sound that's best heard where you are now. So, you're nearly at the corner after a few more hills, bends and forest. Remember these times because there isn't much between Mt Isa and Threeways for example and one day you might be hanging out for a tree or two. So, I hope the winds keep blowing from the West, you cruise through the forests of East Gippsland and enjoy the smell of eucalypt. Stay warm, and steady as she goes......

    1. You not what Jude ,you make it sound so nice listening to Bellbirds and rolling along whistling and singing being pushed by a tail wind i'm going to hitch a ride back and do it all again.lol

  14. Looks like you'll be overdosing on trees for the next few days - a bit different from the Nullarbor eh? Do trees block the wind effect (good or bad)? The rate you are going you will be out of that hell-hole called Victoria sometime tomorrow and into a much nicer part of Oz. I admire your stick-at-it-ness and determination - there are some people in Canberra who could do with a dose of what you've got. Just think, if you were dropping by, you could be Personal Trainer to the P.M.! Probably not a long-term career move though. Push on ol' son, may the sun gods be with you.

    1. Yes the trees really calm the wind what ever direction due to being close to the road and the winding road. Also the hills block it especially when you are in a valley.

  16. Hi Grant, good to see your still making progress despite the rain...one positive aspect is at least its a contrast to the Desert & your gear gets a good wash & the stink out...those bike shorts..phew...word is that between the flatulance & arse sweat your scent can be detected 100kms away. Next thing is you'll have a pack of starving dogs barking after you as they did in Thailand years back...or was that John A?..Hmm?

Keep pedaling & in a couple of days you will be into NSW & gods country ...away from those pesky Victorians.

    All the best

    1. Yes i admit it could be me smelling a bit. I wont be surprised if the Govt charge me a carbon tax on the stench im creating across the country. But i can say one thing though Tony im quite tight around the buttocks area now, muscular wise and i think if you gave me some tobacco and rolly papers i could roll you a ciggy as a party trick just with my cheeks. I'm still in The Big Vic but only 14 kms out, but just don't want to leave yet, so i am at a place called Genoa hanging out till tomorrow

  17. 44 Days of Living the Dream, with the wind coming at ewe and outa ewe.. or should we say phewww.With that Lemon and Honey Shhh tttt put some vitamin Jack Daniels in as well, its good at making you forget you got a Cold.. you wont know you had one till you wake up with a bonus headache - which if your lucky will mask the cold again.. c its win win hehe. Now tell us GW what's the most recurring thought you think of Every Day.. hey cmon lets have it ..

    ReplyDelete
  18. Good question.I don't think i have a recurring thought but many different thoughts go through my head.I'm quite focused what i'm trying to do ,because if i don't, i't might make the challenge harder than what it is. So the thoughts are not too deep but mainly i think about Family, friends, associates, bloggers and especially about people who have no life because they are in a rut. Even though these people are good people. Don't read me wrong ,i am not saying riding around Australia is what everybody should do but Jesus do something, lifes too short. ...............Bit too deep. lol

  19. Hi big guy, just arrived in Wietnam, caught the ferry to Vung Tau and asked about the "Gorilla man and smooth skinned boy" they wheeled out an old toothless bearded hag and she remembers the hairy man but said the 'smooth skinned boy' was too busy checking out the bike tracks and planning his Wietnamese trip to bother getting a massage. So there you have it, the truth will find you out.
I'll be here for 14 days so I might get to 'ride a bike' while here!!! "You werry werry handsome man"

  20. I thought Genoa was in Italy?
When you leave Vic, that will be two states to cross off the list. I know I'm not allowed to mention that, but I think it's great...only two more on this side of the country.
Watch out for Bunyips in that part of this fair land, though.
Are you still listening to radio as you go?
Anyone else noticing the tricky sign in words, or one of them, are getting easier?
    Or has my eyesight improved?
