Day 32

Hello followers, woke this morning to a flat back tyre and because it was so worn to the canvas i put my spare on. Couldn't find a leak in the tube so whacked it back in and its been fine all day. It delayed my start from Port Wakefield time to about 8 which was o.k. because the sun came out and warmed the place up. I had a slight northerly breeze with me and that makes a big difference  because the southerly cuts through you and you just freeze over. The ride into Adelaide was pretty boring until i needed to navigate myself out of the place to Strathalbyn.A few direction sent me in the right direction to the mighty hills of Adelaide. As i was starting to go up i thought Linds is going to enjoy this as his eyes would be fixed on each arrow, but to my horror the tracker was not working and i did not find out till i checked it when i arrived at the hotel in Strathalbyn. Disappointed to not see the bends and twists on this hard days ride. I changed the batteries even though it was still beeping and fired it up and bingo it shows me here now. Met a fellow on the hills,John, who often goes riding who had a chest as big as a 44 gallon drum and a personality just as big.He steered me in the right direction.Couldn't believe it that he was 73 years old
This photo was supposed to show you how high i was above sea level but its not doing a very good job

Is that you in a cow suit Pearl
The 73 yr old John charging up the Adelaide hills.
So after a flat tyre,no tracker and a few too many hills im washed out, so its time for some sleep to attack tomorrow. Hooroo.

  3. Hi Grant glad to see you cycled straight through Adelaide, they're all a bit weird there. You'd probably end up in a barrel or a pie floater or something. Just zoomed in to see where your staying for the night, looks like a pub from above, but I could be wrong. Continually amazed at the progress your making, those hills around Adelaide would have been a bit of fun no doubt.

    1. Hi Carrie, thanks for your comment , but could you please explain,"look after Peci for me" mean.

    2. The explanation is that he broke up with me, so I guess u won't be seeing me again when ur back in Perth. Shame ... I hoped it would go the distance :(

  6. 73 and still going and all the gear as well.
Sure looks good for your future riding across Europe, then the USA as you get older. You could get a small rack for Pearl to sit on, she'd love that.

    2. Grant, I forbid the use of any two-wheeled transportation the day you come home. Pearl is accustommed to warm beds, meals on a silver platter, fortnightly pampering and copious amounts of Animal Planet channels :) ..... BUT then again, you might like it so much you'll keep going!

  7. Hi Grant, the big Pyrenees'walk will start on July 4 till July 24 but at the moment I'm a bit worry about my walking mate Brad. He's been in a bad spot lately and has been diagnosed with kidney stones...and feel really run down. So it does not look good for him at this stage but there's another forty odd days before the start so hopefully things will work out for him. Alone on an isolated snow covered mountain passe in rough weather could prove to be like the great Pyrenean mountaineer Henry Russell put it: sublime tranquillity with a tinge of terror...but like you man I'm in whatever. Carry on chasing the dream mate there is nothing else out there!

  11. Hi Grant....good to see that you are steadily clocking up the km's and at the same time keeping us entertained. My friend Grace has now exceeded the number of blogs that I have put up so I thought I had better post one. All is well here...the Birthday box certainly seemed to be a hit.

  12. Gee, you'd make a great teacher, Grant. Putting commands in capitals...AND WE BETTER BEHAVE, TOO.

But you are a sort of teacher, well, guru really as you are "teaching" us all about strength of character by what you are doing. The old adage "Do as I say, not what I do." is reversed in your case.

The tyre wore out...how are the pants going?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ahhhhh!!!! You've just done the beautiful Coorong. looks like strong westerlies too, but maybe as you're heading down on a SE angle you might have got some assistance.Hope you kept your eyes to the South for some of the views and stopped a little?
I was feeling very sorry for myself this morning after 2 hours in a dentist's chair having a couple of crowns done. I almost, almost thought I'd rather be you but then the anaesthetic wore off, I had a feed and got the tracker going. You are flying down that lakeside, well done. Don't get too excited about all your hits, I think I do half of them. I have the habit now in meetings, especially long ones, of turning it on for a couple of hours. The woman who sits next to me joins in and we notice if the gap lengthens or shortens between signals. Then we pass notes to each other commenting on whether we think there may be hills involved, wind resistance etc. It's a lot of fun, and it gets us through a lot of boring budget meetings. The longest time we had the tracker on was for a 6 hour forum. A lot better looking at that then the people on the other side of the room.
So, settle in now, take the odd rest day, and know that all of the effort is really being appreciated.Smell the roses, I mean the Eucalyptus, when you stop for a cuppa.

    1. Good to see that some married people have a common interest even if it is a blog. Dont worry Jude the bodys hanging in there, its just difficult to juggle when to stop with so many things to look for, meaning wind ,where to stay ,energy level etc. I know one thing when body tells me when enough is enough thats IT.

  14. G'day mate, still going strong I see, fantastic effort so far! Your well into Croweater territory now and I see your having smoko in Kingston home of the "Big Lobster" designed and built by Paul Kelly himself,ís he related? lol.
The original dimensions were in feet but he decided to build it in metric instead, typical Kelly! keep up the good work and stay safe Comparé.

    1. No,he wasnt tortured. And about being grumpy i havent been grumpy since i left Perth. Yes ,and about the boys, they have hardly turned to stainless steal, they have had such a torrid time so i have decided to trade the in at a place just out of Millicent ,though i am restricted with the size i can get to replace them as the photo in the blog shows.

  18. We can't believe that you're about to hit Victoria. Noticed that you bypassed Robe - that is our annual holiday spot so we know the country you're currently riding through quite well. We also wanted to let you know that if you would love a couple of days respite, some good home cooking to replenish some lost kilos and to recharge before the northward journey begins that you are most welcome. We are 80 kms from Geelong - we could come and pick you up and drop you back to the same spot if you are concerned about coming a little bit inland. There are also about 5 bike shops in Ballarat if you need repairs, replacements etc. Tim's mobile 0408503232. But if that's not going to work - we could also come to you with supplies or whatever you need and have a catch up. Loving reading the blog - esp Snowtown.

Well here i am in Melbourne soaking up the winter sunshine in my Bro,s Sandringham apartment by the bay.Seriously regretting the 5 bottles of red that disappeared last night and wondering how it must feel to be the finely tuned kilometre mowing cyclist of Grant Kelly variety.Hope you enjoying the southerners hospitality-good to see you far away from the dreaded snowtown.keep a lookout for you

  21. In Mt Gambier, I see. Visit the Blue Lake, it's really blue on the tracker. You are really motoring. Going to get colder now, as we head towards June.
I was a bit concerned with last night's stop-over. Seemed to be in a bush by the road. Hang the cost...try and make each night a bed somewhere, so I (and the rest of us) don't have guilt feelings when we go to bed.

  23. Hi Glant, it's 09:00hrs Sat morn here in Copenhagen, flat as a pancake so you would power around this place no problems munching on raw herring and talking in a yooldi yooldi type accent. It will be interesting to see the clock time. I too also felt guilty looking at that sad little bush, hell check into the Hilton (with your bike)at make me feel better.
Look at it this way, from now on you will be heading North, warm, friendly, cold beer and they play a different type of sport, not AFL.
    Cheers, keep inspiring me!!
